Yudhaganawa Dageba

One of the largest stupas in Sri Lanka.

This dagoba which is one of the largest stupas in Sri Lanka is a great engineering masterpiece of ancient Sinhalese. This can also be introduced as the largest stupa in the Uva province. When passing Buttala town along Wellawaya Monaragala main road, it is just two kilometers from the Buttala town. This piece of land with stupa boarded by river Manik, Puhulpola range, Yudhagana tank and Buttala town from Eastern, Northern, Western and Southern directions respectively inherits to a very important juncture in our history. This land which is also known as the “chulanganie land” is said to have been used to train soldiers required for the war. There is another famous story in our bruit woven around the place. The fight between the two princes Dutugamunu and Saddatissa upon controversy is said to have taken place in this place.

The most remarkable feature of this stupa is that it belongs to types of kotawehera (short stupa) like Suthigara vehera in Dedigama. There is a  small shrine room built with clay in which you can see a Buddha statue, statues of Sariyuth Mugalan Thero, and gods that belong to the Kandy era. There are several advantages of visiting this place. The places such as  Maligawila where a historical standing statue is situated can be reached within an hour. Dematamal Viharaya which is an important temple that has a connection with the Dutugamunu Saddhaissa’s story is also situated just five kilometers away from this temple.
